Green-lipped mussel topper

Green-lipped mussels are a type of mussel found off the coast of New Zealand. The name comes from the green edges, or “lips”, of the shell. The mussel has a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fatty acids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, meaning they can help reduce swelling and pain in dogs and cats. They also contain an omega-3 fatty acid found only in green-lipped mussels – eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA). ETA has been shown to block pain signals in the body similarly to NSAIDs, without causing similar side effects.

They also contain glycosaminoglycans (glucosamine and chondroitin). These form part of the 'building blocks' of cartilage, so the mussels can also help maintain healthy joints and can relieve joint pain or stiffness. Several studies show that green-lipped mussels have a positive effect on arthritis.

Other important nutrients found in green-lipped mussels are vitamins, amino acids, and minerals, some with antioxidant properties. These nutrients include taurine, vitamins C and E, zinc, magnesium, copper, and selenium.
