Earlier this spring I made these nutritious vegetable snacks for my dog - and these will be perfect to have in the freezer this summer! Not only are they healthy and nutritious, but they're also the perfect cold treat to give your dog on a hot summer day 🌞
Want to see how I did it? I've posted a video of it, and you can find it HERE !
This is how you do it, and why:
🥦 Cut fresh broccoli (both florets and stems) into small pieces of about 2-4mm. Then let them sit on the counter for a total of 40-90 minutes on the counter before cooking. The longer, the better!
What happens when you cut it up and then wait is that sulforaphane (a powerful antioxidant known to fight cancer cells) is released. The reason you need to do this in advance, and not let your dog do it himself, is because a dog's jaw is not built to chew the pieces that small.
🥕 While we wait for the broccoli, I boil the carrots until nice and tender. Boiled carrots contain three times as much beta-carotene (an antioxidant that is important for a dog's vision) as raw carrots! Then I mash them, and this can be done either by hand or with a hand blender. Boiled carrots are much easier for the dog to digest than raw ones.
🥘 Then I steam (not boil) the broccoli. Steaming is the best method to preserve the nutrients, which also makes it easier for the dog to absorb the nutrients!
🫕 I added a little water and some bone broth to both the carrot mixture and the broccoli mixture, to make them a little more fluid (easier to transfer to the silicone mold), but this is completely optional!
🧊 The last thing is to freeze it, and I used the silicone mold PAWS, but other options are LEGS , FRUIT or BABE . And to save space in the freezer, I store them in our ingenious SILICONE BOX that holds a lot!
