Golden paste, for lack of a good Norwegian name for it, is a fantastic supplement for dogs. Why? – studies suggest that golden paste is anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and cancer-preventive! At home, golden paste is something we always have in the freezer, and something the dog gets daily with breakfast.
Recipe:
- 1 dl turmeric
- 1/2 dl virgin coconut oil/MCT
- 2-3 dl water
- 1 tsp freshly ground pepper
Procedure:
- Put the turmeric in a saucepan.
- Start with half the water and place over low/medium heat while stirring with a whisk.
- Let it sit on the heat (without boiling) for about 10 minutes. It should eventually start to resemble a paste, and if it gets too thick, add more water.
- Then add coconut oil (or MCT) and freshly ground pepper (it is important that it is freshly ground because it activates the turmeric so the dog's body actually absorbs it)
- Stir for a couple more minutes, at the same heat
- Let it cool down a bit.
- Transfer it to a glass container and place in the refrigerator or into silicone molds and place them in the freezer.
Durability:
- Two weeks in the refrigerator
- Several months in the freezer (we usually silicone mold DOG BONE or PAW when we have frozen it, but any mold can of course be used!)
Dosage:
Introduce your dog to 1/4 teaspoon of golden paste a couple of times a day. If your dog likes it, you can gradually increase the amount to 1/4 teaspoon per 5 kg of body weight.
- Large dogs: approximately 1 teaspoon daily with food
- Medium dogs: about 1/2 teaspoon
- Small dogs: about 1/4 teaspoon
It is better for the dog to be given small amounts more often, than larger amounts infrequently, as turmeric has a short duration in the dog's system.
NOTE: Dogs that have kidney stone problems, diabetes, are taking medication or are about to have surgery should NOT be given turmeric because it has a blood thinning effect. Consult your veterinarian if you are unsure whether your dog can eat golden paste!
